THE TOWERS

Where a person lives in a tower determines who he or she is. The higher up, the higher the social status. In descending order:

--------------TOPSIDE---------------

Penthouse: Each gang is presided over by a Lord, who has all the power of a medieval king. The top few floors of every building are squalid palaces reserved for the Lord of the Tower, his harem, and all the opulence he can amass for himself.

Hiwall: This is where the gangsters live. They are on the highest rung of gang society, roughly akin to medieval knights. They do not work, they fight. It's nearly impossible for one gang to completely overrun another's tower, so gang fights, while deadly, are more about prestige and social standing than annihilating a rival group.

The Edge: So-called because it's on the edge of Downside. Not a very pleasant place to live because of its proximity to the foul-smelling Sink. This is where the productive members of the tower live; the farmers and artisans of medieval times. There are mechanics who service The Sink, and harvesters who grow food and marijuana. Lower-level gangsters who have yet to prove themselves live on the upper fringes of The Edge, making it one of the most dangerous parts of the tower.

---------------DOWNSIDE---------------

The Sink: Directly below The Edge. This is where all the crude utilities of a tower are located: sewage pumps, mechanical lifts, etc. It’s all jury-rigged, disorganized and very leaky—and all of the leakage spills onto the hapless residents of The Dump below. The Sink is relatively vulnerable to attack, since it's so low-down, but most crews prefer having it below because of the wretched leaks. The boundary between Sink and Dump is indistinct.

The Dump: The sick, the frail, the deformed, the crippled, the mutated and the unfit live in The Dump, on the lowest levels of the tower. They are as vulnerable to attack from outsiders as from the gangsters of the building they inhabit, for whom killing invalids is a recreational pastime. Banishment to The Dump is a severe form of punishment.

No Man's Land: The bottom few stories of any tower, closest to the water line. No one can live so low down because they would be extremely vulnerable to attack from the water.

No one save Zero.
